4 billion years ago the first cells were formed
Just DNA enclosed in a membrane and life was born
It took a billion years before cells photosynthesized
And the oxygen in the atmosphere began to rise

They competed for the energy that was there
They competed for the space to live anywhere
Genetic changes chose who lived or died
If they could adapt the species would survive

In another billion years complex cells are made
A nucleus and the organelles all inside a cell membrane
They probably formed by combining a bunch of simple cells
That diversified and performed all their different functions well

In another billion years there was multicellular life
It happened when the single cells decided to combine
Different cells did different things and if the species stayed alive
Long enough to reproduce, the species would survive

600 million years ago appeared the first animals
Multicellular organisms, without any cell walls
They ate other organisms to get their energy
There were many different kinds, there was great diversity

These animals kept on changing for a very long period of time
Most of them went extinct but the best adapted would survive

It started with a single cell and ended up with you and me
